Gene Golub unexpectedly passed away on November 16, 2007 after hospitalization earlier in the week.
He was a towering figure in numerical analysis and scientific computing who was recognized with many scientific honors, and he played a key role in the creation of the Computer Science Department, the Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics (SCCM) program, and the Institute for Computational Mathematics and Engineering (iCME).

He will be greatly missed both personally and professionally by his friends and students here at Stanford and around the world.

十月底的时候，还在鞍点问题的Workshop上见到这位教授，非常有精神，讨论也最积极，没想到短短半个月就去世了，实在是人生无常。别人都尊称他为Prof. SVD，设计了著名的SVD算法。本来下个学期他还要来浸会上课呢，可惜我永远也上不到他的课了....sigh
